Way back when I was a kid, I used to play the old Space crusade game as well as Hero Quest. Now in all fairness I played more of Space Crusade than I did Hero Quest, as back then I was more of a Sci-fi fan. However Hero quest did lead me on to playing Advanced Hero Quest, and then further down the line Warhammer Quest.

Now its fair to say WHQ took up a lot of my time when it was released, back then their was no internet community fan articles were published in GW`s citadel journal magazine which was published every two months. And add on the odd article that was published in white dwarf, WHQ expanded with many new settings and monsters.

Now in the intervening years I have dusted of WHQ a few times. However with it being a “dead” game with no support over the years, campaigns have not lasted all that long.

How ever it was while watching the following video

Why Hero Quest Is So Great!

That I decided it was time to delve into some dark and dangerous dungeons, in search of fame and fortune!

Now my copy of Warhammer Quest is lacking all of its models, so  that’s out of the window. My copy of Hero Quest (and all of the expansions) were sold on eBay many many years ago, so that one is also out the window.

The only other option is to pick up a new game! and thankfully these days it is a lot easier to pick a game that you like the rules off. Thanks in part to the advent of PDF files of the rules, and other peoples reviews on the internet.

So I started of researching all the different games that are classed as “dungeon crawl” games. Now to be fair I did look a fair few games, most were “off the shelf” boxed sets, but a few were print and play.

In the end I went with Mantic`s Dungeon Saga. For the simple reason the rules seem to be nice and simple, they are not overly complex with loads of charts to remember. It can also be played solo with the aid of the Adventures Companion book, which also lets you to create your own hero (halfling barbarian any one!).

With any luck my copy will arrive tomorrow!

Its fair to say over the last few years I have drifted away from large scale (mass battles) wargames and moved on to small (skirmish) games. This all come about from my change of life style two years ago, leading me to have a lot more free time on my hands. It has also lead me into solo gaming, with the likes of Zombicide, Incursion, and a few others.

However I have always had an “itch” to get back into “dungeon crawl” type games, granted a few years ago I did start playing Warhammer Quest which has to be one of my favorite games. However it was short lived. I could have picked up GW’s new Warhammer Quest – Silver Towers game, however I have my doubts that it would live up to its predecessor!

One of the main reasons that I backed Mantic Games Deadzone v1 was for the solo play, however I could never get my head round the rules. And so for the best part it ended up being shelved. However with the DZ v2 kickstarter last year I had high hopes, but however the solo rules (or AI deck as it was known) are gone. Maybe they will return in a future supplement, who knows.

Zombicide by CMON, can also be played solo. And I have played many games on my own (quite a few when I was laid up in hospital) However the original seasons 1-3 were set in the modern day, while the new Black Plague is set in medieval times and while not relay a “dungeon crawl” it would at a push, pass for one  (especially some of the bigger monsters). CMON have just launched a new KS project called “Massive Darkness” however it is not going to be ready to ship until April 2017, and as much as I like most of the models  I think I will have to pass it by.

However I still have this “itch” for a good old fashioned “dungeon crawl” featuring orcs and goblins, skeletons, and all the rest. This does however lead on to Mantic`s Dungeon Saga. Now first off, I passed on the Kickstarter. At the time I had no interested in the project, and as with a few of their projects there were a fair few problems. However most of them seem to have been sorted out now. I have how ever manged to get hold of a KS backers pledge for a very good price.

Now I just have to wait for it to arrive………

Its been a while (nearly 4 months), and its time to look back at the various KS projects I have backed. So since the last post Deadzone Infestation has turned up see here

Deadzone: Infestation Pt 2……………….

and here.

Deadzone: Infestation Pt 3

As has Wave 2 of AvP

Get Away From Her, You Bitch!…………..

and also Wave 1.5 of Shadows Of brimstone.

The Good, The Bad, And The Mutated…………

and here.

The Good, The Bad, And The Mutated Part 2…………

Lets take a look at what else has happened.

All Quite On the Martian Front: Another company has bought all of the moulds and IP from alien dungeon, however they have stated that they will not full fill any out standing KS items to backers. In other words if you want it you have to pay again!

Shadows Of Brimstone: the next expansion Trederra has been previewed, and it has grown from what it was originally. It is now classed as a “deluxe” expansion.

Aliens vs Predator: Nothing new on the AvP front, apart from a preview of the dropship from Aliens.

Conan: Looks like wave 1 will ship in October (one year later than planed) with wave two following later on.

Zombicide BP: Has just arrived, an boy is the box big!  I did not go for everything this time (like I did with season 3) but their is a hell of a lot of stuff.

Warpath: I only backed this to grab some bits for deadzone, but it would seem that mantic are receiving a lot of flak over some decisions with the new rules. As well as a few of their other KS projects.

Dropfleet Commander: Seems to be going well with delivery next month!

The Walking Dead: Mantic have shown us the new plastic terrain and 2 of the 5 mats for the game. Shipping has been pushed back till October (even i think September was pushing it)

Now lets go have a look at Zombicide Black Plague……………………….

So a few hours after my post yesterday, I received my AvP package from Prodos Games. As I said , I took advantage of the “order something from the web-store, and get what ever has been approved sent with that order”.

And with that i ordered up another power loader and a set of Alien warriors. Now these are the first models that I have picked up at “retail” all of the rest have been from waves 1 and 2 of the kickstarter. The retail packaging is however over the top, I had imagined the packaging being similar to the Warzone models (a plastic clam shell and card insert). However the AvP models come in a card box with a thinner card sleeve round it and the models inside in a zip lock bag.

The models are exactly the same as the ones shown here.

 https://grailslair.wordpress.com/2016/04/01/get-away-from-her-you-bitch/

Moving on the bulk of these models are the poor old Colonial Marines with 4 models while the Predators get just 2.

First up we have the marine Sergeant (left) a nice one piece model armed with a shotgun “I like to keep this handy… for close encounters” he does however bear a slight resemblance to Sergeant Apone from Aliens. The second picture (right)is the Sentry guns, each one is made up of 2 pieces.

Next up we have the only two “special characters” in the game in the form of Major Dutch Shaeffer (left) and Linn Kurosawa (right) both from the 1994 Capcom AvP arcade game. Now I don’t remember playing the AvP arcade game (it was a long time ago after all) but I do remember playing an Aliens one (you can find both online). Both models are made up of 4 pieces, and i can see Linn being re based on a smaller base as the 40mm base looks to big.

Lastly we have the Predator young bloods (left) and Female Predator (right), as far as I can tell the young bloods are based on the predators from the first AvP film. And the female is from the dark horse comics. Two of the young bloods are single piece models, while the other is made up of 3 pieces. The female is made up of 4 pieces. The only problem I can see are the wrist blades, they are very thin (the same goes for Linn’s sword).

Overall as with the rest of the range I am please with the models, the sculpts are great and as you can see their is very little that needs to be cleaned.

As it stands all that is left from my KS pledge are the following

Predator and Marine Objectives (4 for each).

Cloaked Predators, young bloods(3),female(1), berserker (1), 3 from the starter set.

Extra bits heads(3) and guns(4).

Multi part marines (15).

Wargame Rules.

I have been fairly quite over the past few weeks, mainly down to the throat infection that I had back at the end of April returned with a vengeance. It has however lead to me playing a few games, and working on a few old projects.

First up I have had the opportunity to play a few games of  Incursion by Grind House Games, CMON: Zombicide, and finally River Horses: Terminator Genisys. All three can comfortably be played on my dinning room table, and so can be left set up over night if need be.

I have also been toying with Prodos Games Alien vs Predator, now as anyone who has been following this blog will know I backed the kickstarter project way back in November 2013. And Along the way it has had its ups and downs, however after playing it a few times last year it it has remained largely untouched since then. How ever in a moment of madness the other day I decided to go back and work on the models once more. Having painted the two types of alien included in the box last year, see hear

https://grailslair.wordpress.com/2015/07/10/theyre-coming-outta-the-walls-theyre-coming-outta-the-goddamn-walls/

I was left with both the predators (3) and the marines (5) to finish. Now I did start painting both last year but I was not pleased with the results, and so they have languished in their box for just under a year. However it has done me a favour, as their have been quite a few painting guides that have appeared on the internet over the months. And now I can safely say that I have nearly finished painting all the models from the AvP: The Hunt Begins set. I only have all the pouches and straps to do on the Marines and skulls on the predators left to do. And when they are done it will mean I have painted all the models in a starter set! something I have not done for many many years.

Hopefully I will be able to get some games in and give it another try.

I have also taken advantage of Prodos offer to order something from their webstore and get what ever models have been approved shipped with the order. This has however caused a little bit of out rage over paying for shipping again, but if memory serves me right I only paid £10.00 for shipping. And out of the “two” waves that I have had, both have costed more than £10.00 to send. Tracking shows that they are out for delivery today.
